The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, Oct. 9, in Oslo. This year’s selection follows a surge in activity on prediction markets, where the prize has generated $26.7 million in trading volume on the platform Polymarket. The committee received 287 nominations for the award this year, which marks the 125th anniversary of the first prizes awarded in 1901.
The high volume of trading follows a suspected digital breach during the 2025 selection process. Following that cycle, the Norwegian Nobel Committee concluded that "digital espionage" likely occurred after prediction market odds for winner María Corina Machado rose from 0.8% to 72.8% in the hours preceding the official announcement. Two Polymarket accounts reportedly earned approximately $50,000 and $85,000 from those trades. The head of the committee told TV2 in January that evidence suggested an unauthorized party gained access to secret information by infiltrating their systems.
Public interest this year has focused on several prominent names and organizations. Potential contenders identified by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) include Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms, children's advocates in Ukraine, the International Space Station, and two international courts. While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in the award, his contract on Polymarket reflected a 1% implied probability of winning as of Oct. 7, despite accounting for $6.3 million in trading volume. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also drawn attention in prediction markets.
The prize carries a financial award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million. The winner or organization typically receives these funds following a formal ceremony.
For participants in prediction markets, the 2026 cycle demonstrates the increasing scale of financial activity tied to institutional secrecy. The $26.7 million traded on Polymarket for this single award is 26 times the amount traded on the platform for the NFL MVP market. This level of financial incentive has previously led to security concerns for the Nobel Institute, which maintains a 50-year secrecy rule for its nominee lists. A breach of this information can lead to significant shifts in market contracts within hours, as seen during the 2025 cycle when the eventual winner's odds spiked just before the announcement.
The announcement on Friday follows a week of Nobel honors in medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature. The final award in the cycle, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, is scheduled to be announced on Monday, Oct. 12. While the 2025 winner, Venezuelan opposition leader Machado, symbolically gave her medal to Donald Trump, the Nobel Committee has clarified that the honor itself is not transferable and remains with the designated laureate.
