Authorities in Harnett County, North Carolina, arrested 38-year-old Daniel Gear on August 16 following the alleged kidnapping of a 12-year-old girl. Jennifer Maxwell, a healthcare worker, reported finding the girl barefoot and scratched in a ditch at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Sunday in Erwin, North Carolina. Maxwell drove the girl to the Erwin police station and contacted 911.
The incident began during a sleepover at the home of the girl's best friend. According to Maxwell’s account of the girl's statement, a man woke the child and told her to get into his truck. Harnett County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as the uncle of the girl’s friend. The girl reported being driven to a wooded area and forced to walk through thick brush for approximately two hours before she was able to flee toward the road.
Sheriff Wayne Coats confirmed via social media that Gear was apprehended following a seven-hour manhunt. Gear faces charges of first-degree kidnapping and assault. Jail records indicate he is being held on a $2.5 million bond. Maxwell, who provided a statement to the police, reported that her vehicle was totaled in a collision approximately half a mile from the police station following the rescue, though she sustained only minor soreness.
The incident highlights the role of civilian intervention in missing persons cases. Residents in the local community and the surrounding Harnett County area may notice increased awareness regarding child safety at private residences and sleepovers. The legal system will now manage the prosecution of the first-degree kidnapping charge, which carries significant potential penalties under North Carolina law.
The knock-on effects of the case include the financial and logistical burden on the rescuer, whose vehicle was destroyed while returning from the police station, as well as the emotional impact on the students and families connected to the local school district. The case moves next to the Harnett County court system. Daniel Gear is scheduled for his next court appearance in September, where the details of the kidnapping and assault charges will be formally addressed.
