An NYPD officer assigned to the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) assisted in the rescue of a woman on the Brooklyn Bridge on July 8. Officer Cristian Yepes, who was on his third day with the specialized unit, participated in the operation after a report was received regarding a person in distress on top of the bridge.
According to the NYPD, officers negotiated with the woman for approximately one hour at a height of about 200 feet above the East River. Body camera footage released by the department showed Yepes securing the woman to bring her to safety. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated on social media that the officers involved demonstrated significant care and courage during the incident.
Yepes, a seven-year veteran of the patrol force, recently completed eight months of specialized training to join the ESU. The department noted that this was one of three rescues performed by the unit within a single week. Yepes stated in an interview that his training and preparation were focused on ensuring public safety during such emergencies.
