Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert (D) won the Democratic primary for Florida’s 24th Congressional District on Tuesday. According to preliminary results from Decision Desk HQ, Gilbert defeated six other candidates in the race to succeed retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.). Gilbert previously served as the mayor of Miami Gardens before his tenure as a county commissioner.
Rep. Wilson, who has represented the district since 2011, announced her retirement on May 29. She endorsed Gilbert in June, stating at an event that the district required a representative who would continue her approach to advocacy. Gilbert described the endorsement as meaningful, citing his personal experience with local economic challenges such as high rent and healthcare costs as his motivation for seeking office.
The seat became open during a period when Wilson’s participation in House proceedings had decreased. While she remained active on social media, Wilson has not voted in the House since April, citing recovery from eye surgery. Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated she had missed 44.5 percent of House votes in 2026 by June. Gilbert is now expected to face real estate developer Mayonna Te Brown, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the November general election.
For residents in the district, the transition in leadership may result in a change in legislative activity levels. While Rep. Wilson has missed nearly 45 percent of House votes in 2026 due to health-related recovery, Gilbert has campaigned on his record as a local mayor and commissioner, emphasizing a "work-based" approach to federal policy. Voters would notice the change in their direct representation in Washington, D.C., particularly regarding how their representative engages with floor votes and committee work that impacts local federal funding.
The election of a new representative will also alter the delegation's seniority and focus on specific regional issues. Gilbert has specifically named housing costs, where rent can "eat half a paycheck," and healthcare affordability as primary concerns he intends to address if elected. The final decision for the seat will be made by district voters during the general election on November 3, 2026, when Gilbert faces Republican candidate Mayonna Te Brown.
