A van drove into a group of people attending an LGBTQ+ event in Berlin on Saturday, resulting in one death and at least 15 injuries. According to Berlin police, the vehicle struck the crowd during the Christopher Street Day celebrations in the city's Schöneberg district. Emergency services arrived on the scene to treat the injured, while several individuals were transported to local hospitals for further medical attention.
The driver of the van was taken into custody by authorities at the scene. Police spokesperson Anja Dierschke stated that investigators are currently working to determine the circumstances of the incident, including whether the act was intentional or the result of a medical emergency or accident. Officials have not yet released the identity of the driver or the person who was killed.
Following the event, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner issued a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their families. The area was cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams conducted an investigation and cleared the site.
