Pennsylvania authorities have charged Thomas Robinson, 23, with operating a cocaine distribution ring from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house at Penn State. According to court documents reported by NBC News, investigators were alerted to the operation by an informant who identified a seller using the nickname "T-Rob." The informant alleged that the seller accepted payments for the illegal drugs through a Venmo account registered under the username "Tom-Robinson."
The investigation began in 2024 when law enforcement performed a database search for the name provided by the informant. This search led officers to Thomas Robinson and an address associated with the Delta Upsilon fraternity in State College, Pennsylvania. When authorities conducted a raid on the fraternity house in December 2024, the criminal complaint states that Robinson resisted arrest because he believed the responding officers were fellow fraternity members performing a prank.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday recently announced charges against 14 individuals in connection with the campus drug ring. Among those charged is Robinson’s father, Paul Robinson. Following the law enforcement action, Penn State University officials placed the Delta Upsilon fraternity on interim suspension while the investigation continues. University vice president for student affairs Andrea Dowhower stated that the institution was "horrified" by the allegations involving current and former students.
For students and residents in State College, the primary immediate change is the interim suspension of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, which halts the organization's official campus activities. Members of this specific fraternity and the wider student population will notice increased law enforcement scrutiny regarding digital payment platforms like Venmo, as court documents show these tools were central to the investigation. The university also noted that another organization, Sigma Chi, operates outside of university oversight, highlighting a distinction in how different Greek organizations are regulated.
The legal proceedings set a precedent for how digital footprints and public payment usernames are utilized by law enforcement to infiltrate campus-based drug networks. The next steps in the legal process include court appearances for the 14 accused individuals to address the charges brought by the Attorney General. Specific trial dates and the duration of Delta Upsilon’s suspension were not reported in the initial announcement.
