The Department of Defense has confirmed that Jennica Pounds, a software engineer who operates a prominent pro-Trump social media account, is a special government employee (SGE) at the Pentagon. The disclosure followed a public dispute between Pounds and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers regarding the distribution of internal documents.
The matter became public on August 21, when Pounds posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she believed she was being set up to "commit a crime." Pounds, whose "DataRepublican" account has nearly 1 million followers, alleged that a senior official offered her documents about Biden administration censorship as a "gift" to "break" the story, but she later claimed the markings on the documents could have resulted in legal trouble. Rogers identified herself as the official, stating the markings were standard redactions under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and later posted the documents herself.
Following the exchange, a Pentagon official confirmed Pounds's status as a special government employee, a role Pounds stated she began in July to "serve the country in a more hands-on way." While Pounds had previously held Pentagon press credentials that expired in June, she did not publicly disclose her subsequent employment at the department to her social media followers. The Defense Department declined to comment on her specific duties, and Pounds referred inquiries to the Pentagon's deputy press secretary.
For the nearly 1 million followers of the DataRepublican account, as well as the 100,000 followers of Army Lt. Col. Adam D’Ortona—who works in the office of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—the situation has led to scrutiny regarding transparency. D'Ortona, whom the Pentagon says is not a spokesperson or adviser, has defended Pounds. Ethical experts, such as Lauren Harper of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, stated that such nondisclosure blurs the line between journalism and government messaging.
The situation has already led to increased scrutiny of other military-affiliated accounts, including those of D’Ortona and Ret. Col. Thomas Anderson. As of August 27, the Pentagon has not released further details regarding Pounds's specific job description.
