The Philadelphia Police Department is searching for a suspect who allegedly wore a horror-movie style mask while chasing and threatening multiple people in the city’s downtown area. Authorities stated during a Monday press briefing that the individual targeted at least six people over a 20-minute period on Wednesday, August 12.
The incidents occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the Center City neighborhood near City Hall. Security footage released by investigators shows a man dressed in dark clothing and a mask resembling the "Chucky" doll character. According to Police Captain Jason Smith, the suspect followed several individuals, including a woman jogging near the municipal building.
During the encounter with the jogger, Captain Smith reported the suspect held a cellphone in front of her and asked, "Are you ready to die?" A witness identified as Jameka told 6abc that she alerted the jogger to the man's presence. Jameka stated she later fought off the suspect by kicking him in the chest when he turned toward her. Another witness, Luanda Marinho, told CBS News the man asked people if they wanted to race him.
For those living or working in the district, the incident has prompted immediate changes to daily safety routines. Witness Luanda Marinho indicated that she and others are considering altering their exercise routes and schedules to avoid similar encounters. The suspect faces multiple potential charges including harassment, terroristic threats, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and intimidation, which carry significant legal consequences under Pennsylvania law.
The search sets a precedent for how the Philadelphia Police Department utilizes public surveillance footage and community tips to track suspects in high-traffic transit hubs like Suburban Station. As of the Monday briefing, the suspect remained at large. The department has asked anyone with information to contact their tip line at 215-686-TIPS as the investigation continues. No specific court dates or deadlines have been set as no arrests have been made.
