A new POLITICO/Public First poll released July 22 indicates a decline in support for the war in Iran among President Donald Trump’s most consistent supporters. The survey found that 37% of self-identified "MAGA" voters believe the war is worth the economic cost, a decrease from 50% who held that view in May. Additionally, nearly one in five MAGA voters now believe the U.S. should end its involvement regardless of cost.
The data follows a period of renewed hostilities, including the deaths of two U.S. servicemembers in Jordan and domestic gas prices rising above $4 per gallon. According to the poll, 57% of MAGA voters and 63% of non-MAGA Trump voters attribute the increase in gas prices to the conflict. While a majority of Americans have historically opposed the war, this shift represents a change in sentiment within the president’s own electoral coalition.
President Trump stated on Tuesday that Iranian officials seek a meeting, but he maintained that the U.S. has "no interest in even talking" until Iran is "ready to meet in a meaningful way." White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said the president bases national security decisions on the best interests of the American people rather than "fluid opinion polls." White House aides also noted that they expect energy prices to stabilize once Iran’s military capability to disrupt oil shipments is reduced.
The July edition of the POLITICO Poll was conducted by Public First from July 12 to July 15, surveying 2,061 U.S. adults online. The margin of sampling error is ±2.16 percentage points. The survey was weighted by age, race, gender, geography, and educational attainment to reflect the U.S. population.
