This expansion follows an agreement reached in April between the U.S.-based Multi-State Lottery Association and Allwyn UK. The partnership allows players in the U.K. to contribute to the same jackpot pool as U.S. players for the first time in the game's history.
The Multi-State Lottery Association stated that the expansion is expected to cause jackpots to grow at a faster rate due to the larger player base. While the jackpot is shared, U.K. players will have a different prize structure for lower-tier winnings. Additionally, U.K. jackpots will be paid out as an annuity over 30 years, whereas U.S. winners may choose between an annuity and a lump-sum cash payment.
Lottery officials confirmed that the odds of winning the jackpot remain 1 in 292.2 million for all participants regardless of location. Differences in advertised prize amounts will persist due to currency exchange rates and the fact that U.K. prizes are typically displayed after taxes, while U.S. amounts are advertised as pretax figures. The first drawing including U.K. entries is scheduled for Wednesday night.
