Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay announced he will evaluate the team’s special teams unit following a 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. The defeat, which dropped the Rams to a 2-3 record, was finalized when a potential game-tying 48-yard field goal attempt was blocked in overtime.
The Rams entered the 2026 season following an offseason focused on special teams restructuring. After special teams errors contributed to the team losing the top seed in the NFC and a subsequent NFC title game loss to the Seattle Seahawks, McVay hired Bubba Ventrone as special teams coordinator. The team also signed long snapper Joe Cardona and linebacker Grant Stuard to bolster the unit.
During the Monday night game, Rams kicker Harrison Mevis missed two field goals: a 50-yard attempt that went wide right on the opening possession and the 48-yard overtime attempt blocked by Buffalo’s Greg Rousseau. Mevis has now converted 5 of 9 field goal attempts this season, with all misses occurring from beyond 40 yards. McVay also cited his own third-and-5 play call in overtime, a shotgun handoff to Kyren Williams for no gain, as a contributing factor in the loss.
McVay stated he was "going to evaluate everything" regarding the PAT and field goal units, suggesting that personnel adjustments could be implemented. The coach emphasized the need to "regroup and reset" to prevent further losses. The Rams previously lost 30-26 to the Denver Broncos on Sept. 27.
