Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) won the Democratic primary for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating challenger Oliver Larkin. Moskowitz received 63.5 percent of the vote, while Larkin, a union organizer, received 36.5 percent. Following the result, Moskowitz posted a message on the social platform X addressed to Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer who had fundraised for and supported Larkin's candidacy.
The primary contest featured disagreements over U.S. foreign policy. Larkin and Piker have criticized U.S. military aid to Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza, which they have characterized as a genocide. Following Moskowitz's victory post, Piker responded on X by criticizing the representative for addressing a critic of Israel before thanking his constituents. Piker has supported several candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who have won primaries in New York, Michigan, and Colorado this summer.
In other Florida primary results, state Rep. Angie Nixon (D) defeated Alex Vindman in the Democratic Senate race. Nixon, who joined the DSA but did not receive their official endorsement, will face Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) in the general election. The winner of that contest will serve the remaining two years of the term vacated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which concludes in 2028. Nixon received endorsements from Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
The scale of the primary results involved thousands of Democratic voters across Florida, with Moskowitz securing a 27-point margin of victory in his district. For residents of Florida, these results dictate which names will appear on the general election ballot in November. Voters will choose between Moskowitz and his yet-to-be-determined Republican opponent for the House seat, while the Senate race will feature a choice between Nixon and Moody for a federal office that holds a six-year term, currently in its final two years.
The knock-on effects of these races involve the internal policy direction of the Democratic Party regarding U.S. support for Israel and the influence of the Democratic Socialists of America. While Moskowitz defeated a DSA-aligned challenger, Nixon’s victory over Vindman suggests a different outcome for a similar platform at the state level. These results will set the stage for the general election on dates yet to be finalized, where the winners of these primaries will compete for federal office and the right to vote on national legislation and foreign aid packages.
