The Senate Majority PAC, a campaign group aligned with Senate Democrats, announced on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it will spend $1.2 million on a new television advertisement in Mississippi. The investment supports Democratic nominee Scott Colom, a district attorney, in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.
The move represents the group's first spending in the Mississippi Senate race this year. While Mississippi is historically a Republican-leaning state, Democrats reported optimism due to domestic economic factors, such as high gas prices, and the ongoing war in Iran under a Republican administration. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
The advertisement, which begins airing Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, features Colom’s record as a district attorney and criticizes Hyde-Smith’s legislative record, claiming she has not passed a bill in 10 years and voted to reduce Medicaid eligibility. Hyde-Smith’s campaign manager, Jake Monssen, stated that the team is confident voters will reject the "radical agenda" at the ballot box on Nov. 3.
Campaign finance data from AdImpact shows that total spending in the race has reached approximately $8 million. Colom has outspent Hyde-Smith $4.6 million to $3.2 million. Colom, who won his primary in March 2026, recently campaigned with Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and is scheduled to appear at a rally with Kamala Harris on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.
The decision to invest in Mississippi follows a similar move by the national Democratic group in Kansas. These actions indicate a strategy to target traditionally Republican areas. If Colom were to win, he would become the first Black senator from Mississippi since the Reconstruction era.
The outcome of this race will help determine which party controls the Senate. The Senate Majority PAC’s ad campaign is scheduled to run until Election Day. Appearance at a rally with Harris on Oct. 22 is part of the final efforts to mobilize voters before the deadline.
