U.S. Senator Angus King of Maine has requested that local law enforcement be included in the investigation of a fatal shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The incident resulted in the death of Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian national, during a traffic stop in Maine.
According to a statement from ICE, agents attempted to pull Guerrero over, at which point he allegedly tried to flee and used his vehicle as a weapon. The agency reported that an officer fired their weapon in self-defense. This incident follows a similar fatal shooting involving ICE agents and a driver in Houston, Texas.
Senator King expressed concerns regarding the transparency of federal investigations into these events. He stated that involving local authorities is necessary to establish credibility in the findings. Following these two fatal shootings, the Trump administration has ordered ICE to suspend most vehicle stops pending further review.
