The Japanese film "Godzilla Minus Zero," a sequel to the 2023 visual-effects Academy Award winner "Godzilla Minus One," is scheduled for release in U.S. theaters. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the production picks up in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film.
The film follows ex-kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima and his family as they navigate a traumatized Japanese society following World War II. The sequel introduces the dragon Ghidorah, with the human response to the crisis featuring characters such as naval engineer Kenji Noda and meteorologist Makoto Aoyama. Another character, Professor Kanji Murakami, adds a political dimension through his fury toward the occupying Americans.
The production features monster set pieces, including a mid-movie aerial sequence involving a seaplane and a finale where Ghidorah and Godzilla face each other. The film includes a score by Naoki Satō. Produced by Toho, the Japanese-language film is being distributed in the U.S. by GKIDS.
The film is presented in Japanese with English subtitles, and the Motion Picture Association has assigned it an R rating for violent content and bloody images. It has a runtime of 135 minutes.
The film premiered on IMAX screens on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, and is scheduled for a wider theatrical release on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026. After the theatrical run, the film is expected to move to home viewing platforms, though those dates were not reported.
