The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is arriving to begin the first stage of debris removal, a process expected to take several months or years.
The Old Trails Fire, one of three wildfires that ignited during a period of extreme heat and wind in early August, destroyed over 900 structures in and around Washington's second-largest city. The fire, which authorities suspect was started by an arsonist, crossed the Spokane River and leveled entire neighborhoods. Residents returning to the area have described the scene as highly destructive, with many homes reduced to rubble and personal property, such as vehicles, destroyed.
Emergency management officials are currently focused on public education and risk documentation, as they lack the legal authority to prevent residents from returning to their property. The city is conducting ongoing water quality tests and has advised residents with standing homes to wear protective gear, flush their water pipes, and seek city inspections. Environmental experts from Purdue University have recommended stringent soil testing for dangerous chemicals even after visible debris is cleared to ensure properties are safe for rebuilding.
The recovery process will have significant long-term effects on the local housing market and public health infrastructure. Because federal aid has not yet arrived and affordable local hotels are fully booked, many residents are moving back into surviving homes despite the proximity to hazardous debris. Precedents from other urban wildfires, such as the Camp Fire in California, suggest that reconstruction is a slow process; in that case, only 14% of the burned zone was rebuilt after three years. Spokane residents like Melissa and Chris Matthews, whose home was destroyed, expect it could take three to four years before rebuilding is completed.
What happens next: The EPA is beginning the initial phase of toxic debris removal, though no specific completion date for the entire region has been set. Residents are currently filing insurance claims and waiting for federal aid to be distributed. While city officials continue to test the water supply for contamination, they have not reported any issues as of August 25.
