A man suspected of killing two people and injuring six others in a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment complex on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, was facing eviction following a series of incidents involving firearms and assault, according to court documents. The suspect, identified by law enforcement sources as 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson II, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Among the six injured were three Minneapolis police officers, one of whom underwent surgery for two gunshot wounds to the stomach.
Johnson had lived at the Shoreline Plaza complex, formerly known as Loring Towers, since March 2025. On June 16, a law firm representing the apartment management notified him that his lease would be terminated effective June 29. The eviction notice cited six incidents beginning in January, including a March incident where Johnson allegedly assaulted a resident and a June 11 incident where he reportedly displayed a firearm to staff in the management office.
Court records indicate that despite receiving a "last chance directive" requiring him to comply with state concealed carry laws, Johnson allegedly continued to breach his lease. Filings state that on June 19, he displayed a firearm to a security officer while making verbal threats, and on June 25, he brandished a weapon at another resident. One witness reported that just before the Wednesday shooting, Johnson grabbed her and stated he intended to kill his "baby mama." Johnson had denied the allegations in the eviction proceedings and was scheduled for a trial hearing on September 11.
The shooting occurred on the ninth floor of the building. In addition to the three officers wounded by gunfire, city officials said four other officers were treated for exposure to an unknown airborne substance. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two deceased victims. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is involved in the ongoing investigation.
