Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) warned on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, that Republicans could face significant losses in the upcoming Nov. 3 midterm elections, including as many as eight Senate seats. Speaking on his podcast, “The Verdict with Ted Cruz,” the senator stated that high Democratic turnout in early voting could lead to a Republican defeat if GOP-leaning voters do not participate in larger numbers.
The warnings follow earlier concerns raised by Cruz in April 2025 regarding the potential economic impact of administration policies. At that time, Cruz stated that a recession triggered by global trade retaliation and reciprocal tariffs could lead to a "bloodbath" at the polls for the party in power. Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) responded to trade concerns by introducing legislation to increase congressional oversight of tariff implementation.
In his Oct. 30 remarks, Cruz cited data showing that reliable Democratic voters were casting early ballots at higher rates than Republicans. He reported that between eight and 10 Senate races across the country are currently tied. While Cruz noted a possible outcome of 53 Republican seats if the party performs well, he warned that a poor showing could result in the GOP holding only 45 seats.
Cruz specifically highlighted the contest in Texas, where Republican Ken Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico for a U.S. Senate seat. He stated that every statewide race in Texas is currently close enough that Republicans could lose all of them. To support Paxton's campaign, the political action committees MAGA Inc. and the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) have spent more than $220 million on advertisements, with $158 million of the SLF funding provided by Elon Musk.
In Texas, a state with nearly 30 million residents, the loss of every statewide race would end decades of Republican control over executive functions. Nationally, the scale of spending reported—exceeding $220 million for a single Senate race—represents a per-capita expenditure of approximately $7.30 for every person in Texas, highlighting the high financial stakes and the influence of private donors like Musk on political messaging.
A shift in legislative control could immediately impact trade policy, specifically the "reciprocal tariffs" discussed by Cruz. A Democratic-led Congress might move to repeal or alter these duties, which Cruz warned could otherwise lead to job losses and a recession. The final results will be determined by voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, with the new Congress scheduled to be sworn in on Jan. 3, 2027. State election officials in Texas and other battleground states will begin reporting final tallies after polls close on Tuesday night.
