The Texas Longhorns fell from the top spot in the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll following a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 10. The defeat in the Red River Rivalry marked the first loss of the season for Texas, which dropped six spots to No. 7 in the rankings released Sunday.
The Longhorns entered the game at 4-0 but had previously recorded narrow victories over UTSA and Tennessee. In the game against Oklahoma, Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw two fourth-quarter interceptions, including one returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Peyton Bowen to give Oklahoma its first lead. Manning finished the game with three touchdown passes but tied a career high for interceptions.
Special teams and defensive penalties also contributed to the outcome. Oklahoma scored a touchdown on a blocked punt, and a Texas defensive takeaway was negated by a roughing-the-passer penalty. The game concluded on a 47-yard field goal by Oklahoma's Tate Sandell as time expired. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian cited frustration with penalties and noted the team’s need to improve the running game to reduce the pressure on Manning.
Texas returns to Austin for the first of three consecutive home games, starting with a matchup against Florida on Oct. 17. The Longhorns then face a sequence of four consecutive games against teams currently ranked in the Top 25. Oklahoma, now 5-3, continues its season following the victory. Georgia took over the No. 1 ranking this week.
