President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally Friday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to support Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) ahead of a Tuesday runoff election. The event marks a rare in-person campaign appearance for the president, who has recently favored social media posts and tele-town halls to support endorsed candidates in battleground states.
The special Republican primary runoff follows the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham last month. Following his passing, Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC) appointed Darline Graham, the late senator's sister, to serve as the interim replacement. Trump encouraged her to run for the full six-year term and has maintained a long-standing relationship with her family, having delivered the eulogy at Lindsey Graham’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral.
Graham faces a challenge from Republican Rep. Ralph Norman for the nomination. The rally comes after Graham drew criticism for stating "National security is not my thing" and "I’m not that informed on national security" during a debate question regarding U.S. interests in Taiwan. While her campaign described the remark as a misstep by a political newcomer that was addressed in a subsequent television appearance, Norman’s supporters have cited the incident as evidence she is unprepared for office.
The president's decision to focus resources on a safe Republican state has drawn internal criticism from some party operatives. Strategists noted that while Trump controls a $400 million war chest through his MAGA Inc. political action committee, he has prioritized South Carolina over battleground states like Georgia, Michigan, and Texas, where Republican control of the House and Senate may be decided by narrower margins. Supporters of Norman, such as state Rep. Jordan Pace, argued that presidential attention should instead be directed toward shoring up states like Ohio, Alaska, and Maine.
The rally serves as a test of the president's influence following a string of primary losses and his previous dual endorsement in the South Carolina governor's race. A victory for Graham would solidify the president's role as the primary influencer of the state's GOP, while a loss would be viewed by some strategists as an indicator of his limited reach in personal recruitment efforts. Voters will cast their ballots in the runoff on Tuesday, August 25, to finalize the Republican ticket for the November general election.
