Two people were killed and eight others were injured when multiple shooters fired into a crowd during a gathering in Trenton, New Jersey, early Sunday morning. The Mercer County prosecutor reported that a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man died from their injuries, while the remaining eight victims were stabilized at local medical facilities.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on the 100 block of Locust Street in the Wilbur section of East Trenton. Investigators reported finding more than 50 spent shell casings at the scene, where multiple vehicles were also struck by gunfire. According to the prosecutor's office, several individuals approached a block party and began firing into a crowd of approximately 100 people.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora described the event as a large, unauthorized adult gathering involving hundreds of people on a residential street. The mayor noted that one of the deceased victims was a man who had recently been recognized for his commitment to positive change following a period of incarceration. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed she had been briefed on the incident and that state legal officials were in contact with local authorities.
Local residents in the Wilbur section will notice a change in how the city manages public space and neighborhood events. Mayor Gusciora stated that city officials plan to take specific steps to prevent similar large-scale unauthorized gatherings on residential streets, citing the public safety risks to neighbors and first responders when firearms are present in such environments. Residents may see an increased police presence or new enforcement measures regarding block parties as the city attempts to balance the right to gather with public safety requirements.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force is currently leading the investigation to identify the multiple shooters involved. Local officials, including Councilwoman at Large Jasi Mikae Edwards, have called on community members to provide law enforcement with any available video footage or information to assist in the case. As of the current report, no suspects have been named and no arrests have been announced, leaving the investigation ongoing.
