A pair of giant pandas arrived in Atlanta on Sunday, September 27, 2026, to begin a 10-year loan residency at Zoo Atlanta. The pandas, named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a Boeing 777 cargo aircraft designated as the "FedEx Panda Express." The arrival followed an announcement by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a three-day summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The transfer is part of a newly finalized agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The Georgia facility had been without giant pandas since its previous residents departed in 2024. The current arrangement makes Zoo Atlanta one of three U.S. facilities hosting the species, alongside the San Diego Zoo and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, both of which received pandas earlier in 2024.
Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, were born in 2020 and previously lived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. According to the Xinhua News Agency, Ping Ping is identified by dark rings around his eyes, while Fu Shuang has a slightly prominent forehead. The pandas will remain in a month-long quarantine within a newly constructed biosecure facility before the zoo schedules their public debut.
The loan program, which President Xi described as a demonstration of "friendship between the Chinese and Americans," serves as a primary tool of Chinese diplomacy. Beijing has historically utilized these agreements as expressions of goodwill, though the Chinese government has also allowed contracts to lapse during periods of increased international tension. The delivery of the pandas was noted as one of the few concrete results from the recent high-level summit between the U.S. and Chinese presidents.
The next steps for the pandas involve a mandatory health monitoring period overseen by zoo officials. While Zoo Atlanta President Raymond B. King stated that the zoo is eager to share the animals with the community in the coming weeks, a specific date for the public opening of the exhibit has not yet been set. The animals will be under the care of Zoo Atlanta staff for the duration of their decade-long stay.
