Chinese robotics firm Unitree has utilized U.S. military-funded research to develop its most successful quadruped robots, according to former defense officials and researchers involved in the original projects. The company's Go2 model, which launched in 2023 for $1,600, has allowed Unitree to capture a large share of the global market for four-legged robots. While the U.S. Army-funded research was published openly to encourage scientific progress, researchers noted that Chinese firms have been more effective at commercializing these breakthroughs at scale.
The research was conducted primarily through the Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance (RCTA) between 2010 and 2020. This program included the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and industry partners like General Dynamics Land Systems. Ben Katz, a researcher who worked on the military-financed Mini Cheetah robot at MIT, stated that the dimensions of Unitree’s Go series were "to the millimeter" almost identical to the U.S.-developed prototype.
In June, the Pentagon added Unitree to a list of Chinese military companies, characterizing it as a contributor to China's defense industrial base. While Unitree maintains its robots are for civilian use, the company’s devices have appeared on Chinese state television accompanying People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops. In the United States, federal procurement records show the U.S. Army sought a waiver in September 2023 to purchase two Unitree Go2 robots because of a lack of domestic alternatives of similar quality and quantity.
The scale of China's production is supported by a 10-year national industrial strategy launched in 2015, which provided subsidies and fostered clusters of component factories. This allows Chinese firms to rapidly reverse-engineer designs and produce hardware like actuators and motors at lower costs. For U.S. residents and businesses, this has led to a recent shift in trade policy; in July, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned imports of future foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots, including those from Unitree, citing security concerns. This ban limits the availability of low-cost robotics for U.S. education, research, and hobbyist sectors.
The knock-on effects extend to the global supply chain, as U.S. firms struggle to source critical minerals and magnets outside of Chinese-controlled markets. Researchers such as Vijay Kumar of Penn Engineering stated that while the U.S. leads in software, it lacks the industrial base to scale hardware breakthroughs. What happens next depends on several deadlines: Unitree is scheduled for its stock market debut in Shanghai on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Meanwhile, China has threatened to retaliate against the FCC's July import ban, which could further impact international technology trade.
