U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Wednesday that the U.S. Mint will produce a new $1 coin featuring the image of President Donald Trump. The coin is part of a series of initiatives intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. A Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed the coin will be available this fall and will be made of non-precious metals with a "gold-like finish."
The administration cited the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 as the legal basis for the new design. This law permits the Treasury to issue $1 coins with designs emblematic of the U.S. Semiquincentennial. Typically, U.S. Code prohibits living individuals from appearing on federal currency or securities, a rule Bessent previously noted when discussing a proposed $250 bill.
While the Treasury asserts the 2020 law allows for the inclusion of a sitting president on commemorative coinage, the design must remain under the review of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee as mandated by federal law. The coin will include the mandatory inscription "In God We Trust." The Treasury Department stated the release is intended to celebrate American values and the upcoming national anniversary.
