The United Kingdom’s Met Office reported on Friday that a developing El Niño weather pattern is expected to be the strongest in living memory. The national weather forecaster stated that the 2026 event could potentially be the largest of its kind since the 19th century. According to the agency, this weather system is likely to contribute to record-breaking global temperatures in the coming year.
El Niño is a naturally occurring phenomenon characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean, typically repeating every two to seven years. The Met Office noted that while a major El Niño event usually involves a temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius, current forecasts indicate a rise of more than 3 degrees Celsius in equatorial Pacific sea-surface temperatures later this year.
Adam Scaife, the head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office, stated that if these forecasts are accurate, the 2026 event will far exceed recent experiences and their associated climate influences. The agency further projected that 2027 is very likely to surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record. Prior to the formal announcement, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the Met Office headquarters in Exeter on August 14 to meet with chief meteorologists regarding the forecasts.
The scale of this event is expected to influence global temperature records, with the Met Office stating that 2027 is very likely to become the warmest year ever recorded, displacing 2024. For the general public, this shift in global climate patterns typically lasts between nine and 12 months, which could lead to changes in food prices, utility bills related to cooling or heating, and the frequency of extreme weather events in various regions.
Knock-on effects include potential disruptions to international commodity markets and the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) sectors, which track such climate data for financial decision-making. The Met Office indicates that the primary temperature surge in the Pacific will occur later this year, suggesting that the most acute weather impacts and resulting policy or economic responses will likely manifest throughout the first half of 2027.
