The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Euro Car Parks, one of the United Kingdom's largest private parking operators. The inquiry focuses on whether the company's practice of issuing tickets to drivers queuing at petrol forecourts and car washes is fair under consumer protection law. The regulator is also reviewing the company's broader appeals process and whether it meets legal standards.
The action is part of a wider CMA review of the private parking sector following an increase in motorist complaints. Reported issues include unclear signage, technical failures in payment apps, and additional fees added to parking charges. Research from the RAC indicates that the number of private parking tickets issued at locations such as supermarkets and retail parks doubled to 14.4 million over a six-year period.
The CMA has issued an open letter to the entire private parking industry, advising operators to review their terms and conditions to ensure compliance with consumer law. The investigation into Euro Car Parks is currently in the evidence-gathering stage and is scheduled to continue until spring 2027. Trade bodies, including the International Parking Community and the British Parking Association, stated they are reviewing the CMA's guidance to ensure industry standards are maintained.
Industry advocates from the AA and RAC expressed support for the investigation, noting that drivers should not be penalized for waiting to access fuel or electric vehicle charging. Euro Car Parks, which operates over 3,000 facilities, has been contacted for comment. The CMA stated it will take enforcement action if operators are found to be in breach of consumer regulations.
