Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that the United Kingdom will restrict visas for Eritrean nationals in response to what she described as a refusal by the East African nation to accept the return of its citizens. The measures include halting fast-track visa access, removing preferential processing for VIPs, and imposing travel restrictions on Eritrean diplomats outside of London.
The Home Secretary stated that Eritrea has refused to accept the deportation of criminals and irregular migrants who have no legal right to remain in Britain. The Home Office reported that the UK is currently seeking to deport approximately 230 Eritrean foreign nationals who have been convicted of crimes. According to Ministry of Justice figures, 160 Eritrean nationals were in prison in England and Wales as of late June 2026, representing 0.2% of the total prison population.
Home Office data shows that legal travel from Eritrea to the UK is currently limited. In the year ending in June 2026, Eritreans were granted 77 work visas (0.03% of the total), 33 study visas (0.01%), and 269 tourist visas (0.01%). The Embassy of Eritrea in London stated that the UK has not issued a single visa to an Eritrean official since 2023. However, Eritreans represented 18% of migrants arriving via Channel crossings in the year to June, with 5,875 arrivals.
The scale of the issue is concentrated in the asylum and irregular migration sectors. While legal visas for Eritreans numbered fewer than 400 in a 12-month period, 6,952 Eritrean nationals claimed asylum in the UK during the year ending in June 2026. The UK government maintains a high approval rate for these claims, with 84% of initial asylum decisions for Eritreans being successful. The new restrictions represent a shift in how the Home Office uses visa policy as a lever to manage the return of individuals whose claims have been rejected or who have committed crimes.
The move sets a precedent for how the Home Office may handle other nations that do not cooperate with deportation requests. Ms. Mahmood stated she would not hesitate to impose similar measures on other countries. The diplomat travel curbs and the removal of VIP processing took effect on Thursday, October 15, 2026. If an agreement regarding the return of nationals is not reached, the Home Secretary has warned that a complete ban on all Eritrean citizens entering the UK could follow, though no specific deadline for this escalation was reported.
