United Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will add 10 new international routes beginning in 2027. The expansion will introduce service to destinations across Europe and Asia, including new stops in Japan, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, and Italy. Company officials stated this represents the largest international growth in the airline's history.
The decision follows efforts by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to manage flight congestion through the use of "slots." Slots are specific authorization windows provided by the agency that allow airlines to take off or land at a particular time, preventing scheduled flights from exceeding an airport's maximum capacity. United CEO Scott Kirby attributed the expansion to improved operations at Newark Liberty International Airport and increased aircraft production from manufacturers.
Eight of the new routes will depart from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. These destinations include Marseille, France; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Ljubljana, Slovenia; and several Mediterranean locations such as Ibiza, Spain, and Olbia, Italy. Additional routes include service from Washington Dulles to Toulouse, France, and from San Francisco to Okinawa, Japan. The airline currently serves 160 international destinations.
A person traveling from the New York or New Jersey area will notice new direct flight options to cities like Terceira, Portugal, or Catania, Italy, starting as early as March 2027. In his statement to CBS Mornings, CEO Scott Kirby noted that while demand remains strong, fares are returning to "normal levels" after what he described as an "artificial low" during the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift in route availability occurs as the FAA continues to manage airport capacity through slot allocations, which Kirby stated has made Newark a more reliable hub.
The addition of these routes may influence competition among major carriers and impact local economies in the new destination cities by facilitating direct travel from the United States. The expansion is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first flights potentially launching in March of that year. United has not yet reported specific ticket pricing or daily flight frequencies for these new routes.
