Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday morning. In a statement released on social media, the couple confirmed that both the mother and the infant are in good health. The birth took place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with assistance from the White House medical team.
According to the White House Historical Association, this is the first time a sitting vice president has welcomed a child while in office since 1870. The last such occurrence was the birth of Schuyler Colfax III to Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Wade. Previously, Vice President John C. Calhoun also had a child, William, during his term in 1829.
The Vances have three older children, aged 4, 6, and 9. The Vice President has previously spoken publicly about the importance of increasing birth rates in the United States, a topic he has emphasized since his 2021 Senate campaign. The couple stated in a June interview that discussions about expanding their family were influenced in part by the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in 2025.
The birth follows several other recent additions to the families of senior administration officials. These include the fourth child of deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and the second child of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Usha Vance, a former attorney, had been the subject of media commentary regarding her pregnancy since the couple announced it in January.
