Consumer demand for early-2000s-era digital cameras has increased significantly, according to sales data and industry reports. Canon reported that sales for its PowerShot point-and-shoot line increased nearly sevenfold between 2022 and 2025. Similarly, the hardware startup Camp Snap reported its sales more than doubled over the last year as demographics shifted from children at summer camps to Gen Z and millennial young adults.
The trend is driven by an interest in the specific aesthetic of older digital sensors, which users describe as having a warm, grainier, and less processed look compared to modern high-resolution smartphone cameras. Social media platforms like TikTok have amplified the visibility of these devices, while celebrity sightings at high-profile events have further popularized the hardware.
Industry analysts and camera owners attribute the shift to a combination of fashion cycles and "smartphone fatigue." Some users report that dedicated cameras offer a more intentional photography experience by removing the distractions of a multi-purpose screen. In response to the demand, companies like Camp Snap have expanded their retro-style offerings to include screen-free camcorders.
