Walter Koenig, the actor who played Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original "Star Trek" television series and seven subsequent motion pictures, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026. He was 90 years old. His talent representative, Zachery McGinnis of Galactic Productions, announced Monday that Koenig died of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood. The actor was surrounded by his daughter and niece at the time of his passing.
Born Walter Marvin Koenig on Sept. 14, 1936, in Chicago, he was the son of Russian Jewish parents who had shortened their surname from Koenigsberg. After studying psychology at UCLA, Koenig transitioned to acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. His early career included guest appearances on 1960s television programs such as "Combat!," "The Untouchables," and "General Hospital" before he was cast in "Star Trek" for its second season in 1967.
The character of Pavel Chekov was introduced to the starship Enterprise bridge as a young navigator with a distinctive Russian accent and a hairstyle modeled after Davy Jones of The Monkees. In the context of the Cold War, the character served as a supportive presence from the Communist bloc, demonstrating international cooperation in the show's fictional future. Beyond the "Star Trek" franchise, Koenig was known for his recurring role as the antagonist Alfred Bester on the science fiction series "Babylon 5" from 1994 to 1998.
Koenig was a frequent attendee at "Star Trek" conventions for over 30 years. His legacy also includes literary contributions, such as his 1980 production journal "Chekov's Enterprise" and the 1998 memoir "Warped Factors." Koenig described the fan community as a group characterized by a "sense of humanity and a sense of justice."
The actor’s professional impact continued into his final year; in 2026, he received the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the Independent Shorts Awards for his role in the short film "Mr. Fleischmann." Koenig is survived by his daughter, Danielle; he was preceded in death by his son, Andrew, who died in 2010.
