The change follows previous reports regarding Bill Gates' past meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in 2019. While Buffett did not explicitly link the funding change to these reports in his most recent statement, the shift occurs amid ongoing public scrutiny regarding the relationship between Gates and Epstein. Gates has previously expressed regret over the meetings, stating they were intended for philanthropic discussions.
Buffett’s annual gifts, primarily consisting of Berkshire Hathaway stock, have totaled billions of dollars over the years. Under the new arrangement, Susan, Howard, and Peter Buffett will be responsible for distributing the remaining balance of his fortune after his death. The Gates Foundation acknowledged the change, with Chief Executive Mark Suzman stating that the foundation remains grateful for Buffett’s past contributions.
