To facilitate this transition, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are promoting the use of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) waivers. These waivers allow service members with experience operating heavy military vehicles to bypass specific skills tests when applying for a civilian CDL, provided they meet safety and experience requirements.
The initiative follows a series of enforcement actions that led to the revocation of licenses for certain non-citizen drivers.
