President Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into allegations that Richard Grenell, a former leader of the Kennedy Center and current special presidential envoy, misappropriated a multi-million-dollar donation. According to an Axios report cited by The Independent on Monday, October 19, 2026, the probe seeks to determine if funds intended for the performing arts center were diverted. The investigation began after attorney Alina Habba, who is married to the donor in question, approached the president with the claims on October 9.
The dispute centers on a May 2025 transaction involving Turkish businessman Turhan Mildon. Grenell is alleged to have directed Mildon to wire approximately $17 million to a Houston-based company, Texas Armament & Technology. A text message attributed to Grenell stated that $6 million of that total would be arranged as a donation to the Kennedy Center, which would grant Mildon access to VIP events and the administration. Mildon reportedly did not learn until more than a year later that the Kennedy Center had not received the funds.
Grenell has denied the allegations, calling them "absurd" and "false." He stated that he never requested money be sent elsewhere under the guise of a Kennedy Center donation and never received payments from Mildon. While administration officials noted that Mildon did receive access to the Kennedy Center, including the vice president’s box, they also pointed to inconsistencies in the details provided by Habba, noting that the reported donation amount shifted during her presentation of the facts.
The investigation involves a special presidential envoy and approximately $5.6 million to $6 million in intended charitable funds for the Kennedy Center. For the donor, Turhan Mildon, the reported discrepancy involves a total wire transfer of $17 million, a portion of which was also linked to a business deal in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. If the allegations are substantiated, they would indicate that a private individual paid millions of dollars for high-level government access facilitated through a misdirected charitable contribution.
The outcome of the probe could affect federal officials and the internal operations of the Kennedy Center. The investigation by White House Counsel Will Scharf was ordered by Trump to get answers regarding the claims. The case follows recent polling showing high public concern regarding government corruption, though Vice President JD Vance recently stated he had seen no evidence that Trump participates in such corruption.
What happens next depends on the review of documents submitted to the White House by Mildon’s lawyers during the week of October 12, 2026. President Trump directed Scharf to lead the inquiry after the October 9 meeting in the Oval Office. There is currently no public deadline for the conclusion of the investigation, and no formal charges or administrative actions have been announced against Grenell or the involved entities as of October 19. Both the White House and the involved parties have been contacted for further comment.
