Wildfire smoke spreading from Canada has triggered air quality alerts across at least 17 U.S. states, stretching from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic. Officials reported on July 16 that more than 115 million people reside in areas currently under health advisories due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter.
The decrease in air quality has resulted in the cancellation of various outdoor activities and the closure of several public pools and beaches. Major transportation disruptions were also recorded, including flight delays at regional airports due to reduced visibility and hazardous conditions.
Health officials have advised residents in affected regions to limit prolonged outdoor exertion, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. The smoke is the result of ongoing wildfires that have moved across the border, impacting atmospheric conditions across a broad section of the eastern United States.
