MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for the William Jewell College football team, died Saturday following a medical emergency during the team's season-opening game. The college, located in Liberty, Missouri, confirmed the death of the business administration major in a statement.
The incident occurred on the William Jewell sideline during a game against Fort Lewis College. The school announced via social media that the remainder of the contest was postponed as a result of the emergency. Officials did not immediately release a specific cause of death or further details regarding the nature of the medical event.
Barnett was a resident of Liberty and had previously helped lead Liberty North High School to a state championship. During the 2025 season at William Jewell, he started five games before a season-ending injury occurred. Fort Lewis College Director of Athletics Shawn Jakubowski expressed condolences to the William Jewell community and stated that counseling staff would be made available to Fort Lewis players and staff. The school scheduled a vigil for 8 p.m. Saturday to commemorate Barnett’s life.
