President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Thursday, prompting thousands of people to gather in protest throughout Ukraine. The dismissal is part of a broader government reshuffle that includes the resignation of the country's prime minister. Zelenskyy stated the decision was necessary due to ongoing friction between the Defense Ministry and Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of Ukraine's armed forces.
Fedorov, who held the post for six months, was recognized for integrating drone technology and modernizing military procurement. During a news conference following his removal, Fedorov alleged that Syrskyi had blocked necessary reforms, stating that the military leadership was resistant to technological changes required by shifting battlefield conditions.
Syrskyi did not address Fedorov's specific allegations but thanked the outgoing minister for his service in a social media post. Maj. Gen. Yevhen Khmara, the acting head of the state security service (SBU), has been appointed to perform the duties of defense minister in the interim. The reshuffle occurs as Ukraine enters its fifth year of conflict following Russia's 2022 invasion.
The protests consisted largely of young Ukrainians who credited Fedorov with improving the military's performance through technological innovation. Zelenskyy defended the move, saying that if leadership conflicts cannot be resolved internally, he must intervene to maintain government functionality during wartime.
