Authorities on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, released a 911 recording of the man who shot and killed a gunman during an Oct. 15 attack at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The audio, obtained through a public records request, documents a conversation between Kaylub Giamanco and an emergency dispatcher as the shooting was beginning.
The release follows the Oct. 15 incident in which 16-year-old Griffin J. John II shot his way through locked doors at the school. The gunman killed three children—ages 5, 8, and 11—and one teacher in a special needs classroom. One additional student was left in critical condition and another teacher, identified as Becky Drury, was shot in her left hand and right arm.
In the recorded call, Giamanco informed the dispatcher that he saw a person with a gun at the school where his daughter is a student. Giamanco stated he was armed and prepared to shoot the intruder, while the dispatcher instructed him not to take action and wait for officers to arrive. Giamanco told the operator the shooter was entering the building and firing shots before the call ended. Giamanco later reported that he entered the school through a window and shot the gunman after seeing him struggling with another teacher, Cassidy Schutz.
The scale of the physical impact was concentrated on the classroom targeted, where four of the six people present were killed. One teacher, Becky Drury, reported being shot at close range, while a student was left in critical condition. The release of the 911 audio and subsequent statements from school officials provide the public with a chronological account of the roughly one-minute window in which the citizen intervention occurred. This case sets a local precedent regarding the intersection of law enforcement response and armed civilian involvement during school shootings.
The release of these records is part of the ongoing investigation and public accounting of the Oct. 15 shooting. While the shooter is deceased, the legal and administrative review of the school’s security measures and the police response continues. Further updates regarding the recovery of the injured student and teacher, as well as any policy changes by Bend-La Pine Schools, have not been scheduled. Officials have not reported any pending criminal charges against Giamanco for his role in the incident.
